The City of Mebane is recruiting members for the Recreation and Parks Advocacy Commission to provide direction to the City Council and the Recreation and Parks Department regarding matters related to Recreation and Parks programs, facilities, policies, and its long-range plan. These members also must be a “Champion” of Recreation and Parks by promoting parks, programs, and events to other citizens, legislators, and others to understand, first hand, the essential value that Recreation and Parks has to our positively charming community.
The Advocacy Commission meets every other month on the 3rd Monday of those months at 6:00 pm, for approximately 2 hours, at The Mebane Arts and Community Center. Special meetings may be called at any time as needed.

Justin Brawley - Secretary |
Justin has spent his whole life in North Carolina except for the time he was in the military. When he moved back to NC he landed in Mebane and loves calling it his home. He has an 18 year old daughter who is a freshman at the University of Central Arkansas and is majoring in elementary education. Justin is an avid sports fan, loves the outdoors, and with those interests he looks forward to being able to work with RPAC.

Shayla Clemons-Armas |
Shayla Clemons Armas is originally from Chapel Hill. Relocated to Mebane in 2012. She is excited to be apart of RPAC. She is married with 2 boys. Shayla loves the feel of community and finding exciting experiences in her town. She is currently a Cytotechnologist Supervisor at Labcorp. Zumba is her passion and has the love for sports and physical activities. The family is also involved in Coed Adult Volleyball, soccer, basketball and Martial Arts.

Tanner Deisch |
Tanner Deisch, Aquatics Supervisor for the Town of Chapel Hill North Carolina has recently been recognized by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) as a “30 Under 30” leader in the field. He earned his master’s degree from Western Kentucky University in Recreation & Sport Administration. His work history includes facility management, staff training and development, collegiate class instruction, and risk management. With over five years in municipal government, Deisch has a passion for helping make communities better. Deisch can be found strolling around downtown with his 7-year-old corgi, Rigby.

LaShonda Hester |
LaShonda B. Hester, a native of Chatham County, NC is a proud Mebane resident and excited to serve as a member of the Recreation and Parks Advocacy Commision. Mrs. Hester, a proud educator, has served as a teacher, coach, Assistant Principal, Consultant and Principal. Her work in education has been and continues to be in traditional public schools and public charter schools of NC. The mom of two, Mrs. Hester is committed to giving back to the Mebane community and ensuring it continues to be a place that provides great opportunities for all.

Sherri Seagroves - Chair |
Sherri Seagroves moved to Mebane from New York when she was in high school and returned in 2000 to be near family. She earned her bachelor’s degree from ECU and master’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill. She is the owner of Carolina Plastics Recruiters, an executive recruiting firm and franchise member of MRI Network. She has been recognized for her exemplary work within the Network by receiving multiple awards including the Alan Schonberg Lifetime Achievement award. Sherri is a certified yoga teacher (RYT 200), Master Gardener and avid hiker. She has taught boot camp, yoga, Spin, and swimming in our community and is committed to providing opportunities for health and wellness. She is a proud member of Storied Church, Mebane Business Association and the Mebane Woman’s Club.

Jesse Whitaker - Vice Chair |
A Hillsborough NC, native, Jesse moved to Mebane in 2018 where we now lives with his wife and three young children. Jesse is an avid tennis player and he and his family are heavily engaged with the tennis programming offered through Mebane Parks and Rec. Additionally, Jesse and his family take advantage of yoga, t-ball, and MYSA soccer programs, as well as the numerous playgrounds and parks spread throughout the city. Jesse joined the RPAC in order to contribute to the community in an area he is passionate about.
